6 Dead, 20 Hurt In Greyhound Bus Crash In Fresno
Six people have been killed and 20 others have been injured after a Sacramento-bound Greyhound bus crashed on northbound State Route Highway 99 in California's Central Valley.
California Highway Patrol Officer Michelle Sigmond says the bus driver swerved to avoid another crash involving an overturned SUV and slammed into the center divider and a tree. The crash occurred at about 2:35 a.m. just outside downtown Fresno near McKinley Street.
Five people died at the scene of the crash just outside downtown Fresno.
One person was pronounced dead at Fresno Community Regional Medical Center, Sigmond said.
At least 20 people were injured according to early reports, with some listed in critical condition and others having escaped with bruises and cuts. There were a total of 35 passengers on board.
The bus departed Los Angeles late Wednesday night and stopped in Fresno.
Bonnie Bastian, a spokeswoman for Greyhound, said the bus was on its way to Madera for one of about eight scheduled stops en route to Sacramento when the crash occurred.
Greyhound Lines released the following statement Thursday morning:
"We are cooperating with the California Highway Patrol as they investigate the incident. At this time, we are unsure of any injuries."
Northbound lanes of Highway 99, a major route through the San Joaquin Valley, have been closed since the crash.
Greyhound is asking individuals who may believe they have a friend or family member on this schedule to call the friend and family hotline at 1-800-972-4583.
